Are your meals free from salt, sugars and additives?Updated 6 hours ago

Salt & Suagrs

We work with our Children's Dietitian, Lucy Upton, to develop our meals to be nutritionally balanced for children; this includes a policy of never adding salt or sugar to our meals when cooking them. However, some of our recipes contain a very small amount of sugar or salt, which is a secondary ingredient in some of the ingredients we use, for example, cheese, oat milk and tomato purée.

The sugar content which you see on our nutritional labels is due to naturally occurring sugars in ingredients such as vegetables and carbohydrates - this is the same for nearly all foods.

Whilst the salt and sugar content of our meals is minimal, we always recommend referring to the content in each of our meals as shown on the nutritional table on the product page, or on the packaging.

Additives

The term 'additive' refers to any ingredient which performs a function in a food; for example the baking powder used in our banana pancakes to make them light and fluffy is technically an 'additive'. However, we use very few of these ingredients and they are always completely safe, natural and no different to ingredients you would find in your kitchen cupboard at home. Here are the additives used in our meals and the purpose of them:

  • Baking powder (Mono calcium phosphate, Corn starch, Sodium bicarbonate): Used to make pancakes & courgette bites light and fluffy, the same as the baking powder you have in your cupboard at home
  • Citric acid: Added to our tinned tomatoes by the manufacturer as a natural preservative (the same thing found in lemons!). Less than 2% citric acid is used and it is totally harmless and found in many of the tins in your cupboard.
